“It has been well said that to omit Calvin from the history of western civilization ‘is to read history with one eye shut’.”
S.M. Houghton, Sketches from Church History
Calvin and history... last year, my family and I were on a walking tour in Colonial Williamsburg. The tour guide was talking about John Calvin's influence on the "American Experiment" when someone, who was not part of our group, became very irate and started hurling obscenities at our group.
The "gentleman" then became even more aggressive, when we tried to calm him down, in his behavior until he finally called to police claiming that we were inciting a riot. When the police arrived he explained to them the danger of speaking about John Calvin in public. You can imagine the reaction of the officers on the scene... "Um, yeah. Ok. Thank you, Sir. If you don't like what they're saying just move on down the street, they're not breaking any laws that we're aware of..." Amazing...
