On this day, March 21, 1685, Johann Sebastian Bach, famed German musician and composer, was born in Eisenach, Germany (d. 1750). Though largely unrecognized in his day and forgotten for years after his death, he is now considered one of history's unequaled musical maters. Nearly three-fourths of his 1,000 compositions were written for use in worship. Between his musical genius, his devotion to Christ and the affect of his music, he has come to be known in many circles as the "Fifth Evangelist." Johann Sebastian Bach once stated: "The aim...of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul."
